In fall of 2014, Washington District 50 Schools began using STAR Enterprises as a means to benchmark student growth. Students in grades K-8 take the STAR assessment 3 times a year (fall, winter, and spring.) This assessment measures progress in math and reading based on national norms. This is a computer based, adaptive assessment, meaning the questions students answer are not all the same. The difficulty of the questions a students recieves is determined by how a student answers previous questions. All the questions on the STAR assessments are based on the Common Core Standards, though not every standard is tested on every time..

After a testing session, teachers have access to a variety of reports that show how each student performed. STAR also provides teachers with resources to provide instructional guidance on areas in which a student may need more support. The results of the STAR assessments also provide teachers with another resource to use in determing each student's needs in Response to Intervention.

STAR also offers assessments for Progress Monitoring. A student can take a STAR assessment as often as weekly. This allows teachers to monitor students progress within Response to Intervention Tiers II and III and make adjustments to interventions as needed.
