Tier I

There are three stages in RtI. The first is Tier I. Tier I is classroom instruction and includes all students. Students fully participate in classroom lessons and are also benchmark tested 3 times a year so teachers can monitor growth. Students who have specific subject learning deficits that cannot be improved upon during core classroom instruction, may be referred to Tier II.

Tier II

In Tier II intervention, a teacher will work with a small group of students for approximately 30 minutes daily on a specific skill. The students in this group all have the same general need and will work together with the teacher to learn the skill(s). Student progress is measured over time and if the student is still struggling after several weeks of Tier II instruction, the teacher may change the method of instruction, the intervention used, or refer the student to Tier III intervention services.

Tier III

In Tier III, the student will still recieve Tier I and Tier II instruction, but will now also recieve individualized instruction by a teacher often, but not always, outside the student's classroom setting. This level of intervention is more intensive and is structured to meet the needs of that individual student. Student progress is monitored over time and if the student shows adequate progress during the set time frame, he/she may be discontinued from Tier III services, but may remain in Tier II. If the student does not show adequate progress, the intervention may be adjusted or a referral for special education services may be a possibility.
